Protect Your RV

Recreational Vehicle (RV) owners are a special breed. They love to take to the highway because they know traveling is more than just a means to get from point "A" to point "B."

RV owners know the journey means as much as the destination.

While RV'ers enjoy being on the road and getting away, many mistakenly assume that RV insurance is about the same as car insurance.

In fact, if you don't have proper insurance for your RV, you may face financial hardship if you should have an accident.

There are several classes of recreational vehicles and they each need special insurance:

Class A

Covers RVs built like large commercial buses

Class B

Resemble vans, but have taller ceilings so you can stand up inside

Class C

Large vehicles made from trucks or vans

What Does RV Insurance Cover?

RV insurance covers seven different types of “RV”s.

  • Class A Motorhomes
  • Class B Motorhomes
  • Class C Motorhomes
  • Conventional Travel Trailers
  • Fifth-Wheel Travel Trailers
  • Pop-Up Campers
  • Truck Campers

What Makes RV Insurance Unique?

RV insurance combines features of both auto and home insurance. It covers your vehicle for collisions and comprehensive risks, and your living space for theft, fire, liability, and other events.

On the road, RV insurance protects against accidents and, with optional endorsements, may cover unexpected breakdowns or provide roadside assistance.

When parked or camping, your RV is treated like your home, so coverage for contents, personal belongings, and liability becomes important.

Because RVs are larger and can cause more damage, higher liability limits are often recommended. Additional coverage options (such as full-timer liability, personal effects, and emergency expenses) may be available depending on how you use your RV.

RV Insurance FAQs:

What are my options for my RV policy?
  • Camper liability (Vacation Liability)— since you are responsible for what happens inside your RV and the lot or campsite it’s parked on (just like your house.)
  • Increased bodily and property damage liability is not uncommon, especially if you have an expensive and large RV.
  • 24-hour roadside assistance is a worthwhile feature that could really save you time and money even if you only use it once. And if you never need it, what peace of mind!
  • Emergency expense pays transportation, hotel, food and fuel expenses if your vehicle is damaged during a trip or becomes disabled.
  • Replacement costs, if eligible, pays the cost of a new replacement vehicle or the value listed on the Declaration page in the event of a total loss. After 5 model years the amount listed on the Declaration page will be paid.
  • Personal Effects covers your personal items that are normally used in conjunction with the insured vehicle.
How much is RV insurance?
RV insurance costs vary widely depending on the type of RV you own, how you use it, and where you live.

What affects the price of RV insurance?

  • RV class and value
  • How often you drive or live in the RV
  • Storage location
  • Driving record
  • Coverage options and deductibles
  • State and local risk factors (weather, theft rates, etc.)
What does RV Insurance not cover?

While RV insurance offers important protection on and off the road, there are several common exclusions you should be aware of. Most policies do not cover normal wear and tear, routine maintenance issues, or mechanical breakdowns that happen over time. They also exclude damage caused by mold, fungi, rot, or infestations from pests such as insects or rodents.

RV insurance generally won’t apply if the vehicle is used for business purposes or if damage is caused intentionally. And depending on the policy, certain natural disasters—like floods or earthquakes—may only be covered if you add a specific endorsement.

Understanding these exclusions can help you choose the right coverage and avoid costly surprises down the road.
